Service Animals and PTSD

Print Friendly, PDF & Email

Many veterans, diagnosed with PTSD, have found that service animals and PTSD can be a beneficial combination. Animals of many different types have helped those diagnosed with PTSD find a way through. Karolyn Smith found healing with the help of a tiny kitten who was missing part of her leg. She even wrote a book about it. Others have found that connection with birds, dogs, horses and even bees. We have seen an increase in the number of smaller local organizations using equine therapy and in the number of organizations that help find and train service animals.

What this means is that we need to support service animals. We need to help the organizations that train and provide service animals and we need to ensure those that have been diagnosed with PTSD are given information about how service animals can help.
